What are some children’s books about Oklahoma you’ll find here?
Right now our Oklahoma children’s bookshelf is small. There’s the Discover America State by State series book introducing Oklahoma alphabetically. There’s the Oklahoma Jeopardy! trivia book. And a Santa is Coming to Oklahoma book that highlights some of the state’s most well-known sites. More will be added.
What are some bookish activities for families to do in Oklahoma?
S.E. Hinton, the author of many popular young adult novels, was born in Tulsa, OK. She wrote many stories set in the state. One of her most popular novels, and her first, became a movie. I first saw The Outsiders when I was a young adult myself. Watching the movie made me want to read the book, and reading the book made me want to read all of her other books.
When Francis Ford Coppola was set to film The Outsiders in the early 1980s, he opted to film on location. The house used in the movie is now a museum, The Outsiders House Museum. While it displays the items and tells the story of the movies, not necessarily the book, I like to think that anyone who watches the movie will go on the same book-loving journey I did.
