Traveling to Greece? Here are some of my personal recommendations:
I went to Athens several years ago. I immediately fell in love with the city and the country. Now, I don’t consider myself a Greece expert by any stretch, but I have to share some of my favorite things below.
One of my favorite activities
Along with visiting both the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, I also recommend getting shoes made at this popular shoe shop, Stavros Mellisinos, the Poet Sandal maker of Athens. I told one of my friends to visit during her cruise stopover in Athens and she told me that was her favorite experience during her trip!
One of the best tour companies ever
For airport transfers, day trips, and more, I highly recommend Deep Blue Tours. The owner, Dmitri, went above and beyond showing us the sites in Athens. He made suggestions, made sure we knew to contact him if we needed anything else, and most of all, he listened. When we had extra time before our flight he offered to show us something on the way. Unsure of what to see, he asked us some questions and took us to the place that probably has the most amazing views of the entire city. Thank you so much, Dmitri. Take a look at their website to check out the variety of options available.
One of the coolest apartment rentals
If you’re looking for a place to stay, I can also recommend this apartment, “Your Home Away“. It is located in the Hilton area of Athens, which means easy access to the convention center, public transportation, and a small selection of restaurants and shops. It also means it’s not near the more popular tourist sites that I wanted to visit, but that’s ok. We opted to travel into a more central area for most of our meals, and taxi prices were very reasonable. We loved the spacious rooms, and the large dining table surrounded by books.
Greece Family Tour Suggestions
While Deep Blue Tours, that I mentioned above, offers many tour opportunities and customization, I wanted to also suggest some tours specifically for families. The following tours were created with two things in mind: a family-friendly itinerary and a kid-friendly tour guide.
The tours below are one day or only a few hours. They give a nice overview of a Greek city or provide a specific experience. They are good introductions for ideas of what to do for the rest of your trip or a unique activity that the family will remember forever.

Acropolis Day Tour – Private
I am a strong believer that, when given the opportunity, parents should show kids the places they will come to know in their history classes. So a trip to the Acropolis only makes sense. Having a private guide at your disposal is priceless. They can bring life to the archeological site in a way that’s hard to do on your own. Find out more here. And you can include the Acropolis Museum, farther down the hill, in this tour.
Aesop’s Fables: Family Game at the Athens National Garden
I’m considering this for my own trip to Athens with my kids. Actors will share Aesop’s stories with us in the National Garden. It seems like a lot of fun. Get more details here.
Ancient Athens – Private Walking Tour
If you want to spend your Athens days visiting more than just the Acropolis, but still eager to get some of those ancient ways experienced, this tour is just for you. This tour combines a family-friendly Athens expert guide, with a hidden treasure hunt, and the ancient sites of Athens for a fun way to explore and learn. This is a tour made for kids and parents will appreciate it, too. Learn more.
Mycenae Day Tip – Private
This is a long day. A ten-hour tour. Except, the key here, is that this tour is focused on both educating and entertaining the kids. Learn some serious history in Mycenae, visit a pottery shop and bring home a handmade souvenir, and enjoy all of the other bonuses of a very well thought out day trip. More information here.
