A children’s picture book about Italy
Italy is just a very picturesque country (it was even voted one of the top 10 most beautiful countries in the world). For that reason, most books set in Italy will likely have great pictures. Here’s one to get you started:
I love a good ABC book of a place. The format allows for a wide selection of topics to be discussed in a logical way. I picked this one because it’s about Italy. There are so many picture books about specific areas, but I wanted a more general recommendation.
Please note: scroll down to find so many city-specific picture books for Italian cities. More are added all the time!
Italian Language Books for Kids
I’m a huge fan of the Teach Me Everyday series. So much fun. They include a book and a CD, and both English and Italian. While the voices may not be native, they are a fun way to introduce kids to the language.
Picture dictionaries are also fun for kids. Especially when they’re comfortable sounding out words themselves.
Books set in Italy – Recommendations for Adults
If you want to read books about Italy alongside your kids, here are some recommendations.
Dan Brown’s books are fast-paced and packed with destination details that not only make you feel like you’re there, but give so much background information that you end up learning something, too. They’re almost like guidebooks disguised as thrillers.
- Angels and Demons: This focuses on both Rome and the Vatican within Rome.
- Inferno: This stars the beautiful cities of Florence and Venice.
I recently started reading Beautiful Ruins while heading from Munich to Venice. We hadn’t planned to visit Cinque Terre during the trip, but decided to at the last minute. The book is told through various perspectives so less than half of the chapters are set in Italy, but those chapters are amazing. I read a portion of the book while sitting at the beach on Monterosso al Mare in Cinque Terre. It’s strange, but I felt the book helped me appreciate my trip more and my trip helped me appreciate the book more. It ended up being a book I relaxed into and didn’t want to end.
