Description
The Trumpeter of Krakow is about a family who flees Ukraine for Krakow. Amazon describes it:
A Polish family in the Middle Ages guards a great secret treasure and a boy’s memory of an earlier trumpeter of Krakow makes it possible for him to save his father.
The Trumpeter of Krakow is interesting because it was written in the 1920s and is about life in Krakow during the late 1400s. Reading reviews about the book someone wondered how Krakow looked both in the time it takes place and the time of its writing compared to today. I have not been to the city myself, but according to this Washington Post article, it probably looks the same. While the city was occupied, it has never been bombed. So many of the original buildings that stood in the 1400s and the 1920s are still standing today.
Also, another reviewer suggests reading it aloud. Since it’s available on Audible (see below), the family can enjoy the book together.
For more information about Krakow, you can check out its UNESCO World Heritage inscription description, which includes many images of the Historic City Center.
