A Children’s book set in Berlin
One of the saddest stories to me about the Berlin Wall is how it separated families in Berlin.
About A Night Divided, a story set in divided Berlin
This fictional account follows the story of 12-year-old Gerta. While her brother and father were searching for work, a wall was built in the city dividing the family. Gerta, her mom, and another brother are in the East. The rest in the West. She discovers that her dad wants her to tunnel through to the other side, so the planning starts. Will she make it?

Planning a family trip to Berlin?
While this is a fictional story, it will help readers get a feel for Cold-War Berlin. If you’re planning a trip to Berlin, I think planning a trip to the Bernauer Strasse Historical Site would be a good place to visit. Along with many other pieces of information about Berlin’s history, you can see the paths of both successful and unsuccessful tunnels in the past. When I visited I did it as part of a walking tour, which I think is the best way to visit. Also, check out my page for family travel tips for Germany for more ideas on visiting Berlin and more.
