One of the saddest stories to me about the Berlin Wall is how it separated families in Berlin.
This fictional account follows the story of 12-year-old Gerta. While her brother and father were searching for work, a wall was built in the city dividing the family. Gerta, her mom, and another brother in the East. The rest in the West. She discovers that her dad wants her to tunnel through to the other side, so the planning starts. Will she make it?
While this is a fictional story, it will help readers get a feel for Cold-War Berlin. If you’re planning a trip to Berlin, I think planning a trip to the Bernauer Strasse Historical Site would be a good place to visit. Along with many other pieces of information about Berlin’s history, you can see the paths of both successful and unsuccessful tunnels in the past.
There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One of these is roots; the other, wings.
