I’ve been following the Instagram account for Books are Magic for a while. I don’t remember how I first discovered it, but I’m glad I did. Books are Magic is a bookstore in Brooklyn. It opened in 2017. The owner of the shop wrote one of my favorite reads of the summer of 2018 (a good summer of reading for me), Modern Lovers.
So, when I found myself making plans with my Brooklyn-based friend, I knew that we had to try to meet near this bookstore.
Fortunately for me, it worked out.
After a quick bite of pizza, we wandered the comparatively empty streets of Cobble Hill (as it was December 30 and we spent the morning in pre-New Year’s Eve Manhattan). And just like magic, the bookstore appeared.
We stopped for pictures next to the Books are
The first thing I noticed? The light. It had this great juxtaposition of cozy and light. Inviting.
So, I glanced around. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of time to just enjoy the bookstore. I looked at some of the titles on the shelves, then headed to the kid’s section.
My kids had already made themselves comfortable on the bean bags. There were some younger kids (probably around one) enjoying the area. Definitely a fun place for families.
I picked up a couple of selections for my kids and myself.
It is worth the stop. It’s also worth giving their IG a follow. They have so many book-ish events for kids and adults that I was mad at myself for not taking my friends advice and moving to Brooklyn years ago. This is the type of bookstore I would want to own, and it’s the type of bookstore I would want available for me and my family to frequent.
