Personal tips for visiting Austria with Kids
I’ve visited Austria a few times with my kids. Here are some things to consider for your trip.
Visiting Salzburg with Kids
Salzburg is one of my favorite cities in Europe to visit with kids. It’s probably because it was our first official vacation with kids. We took my oldest there when he was 3 months old.
Travel from Bavaria (where we were staying at the time) is so easy with trains. The BayernTicket allowed the three of us to go from Prien am Chiemsee to Salzburg on a gorgeous countryside rail. Once in the Salzburg, it was an easy trip to the city center.
We stayed at the Hotel Elefant. I don’t think we could have picked a better location. It was right around the corner from Mozart’s birth home, close to amazing restaurants, walking distance to everything we wanted to see, and right next to a DM. (DM is similar to a CVS or Walgreens in the US. I could walk next door for diapers and formula, so I appreciated the convenience as a newly traveling mom.)
There were many tours available, but we settled on a bus tour. Because the city center is a pedestrian zone, the tours had to stick to the outskirts, but that was ok by me.
Visitors with kids older than three months may want to visit the famous Salt Mines the city gets its name from, or go on a Sound of Music tour.
