This Children’s book Sierra Leone: The Bite of the Mango, is about Mariatu Kamara. She lives in a rural village when the fear of rebel attacks have her heading to a nearby village. Unfortunately, she gets caught and tortured before arriving. Her hands are both cut off, but she survives. The first food she eats after her attack is a mango. And though it was hard for her to hold the mango, its sweetness reminded her that she does want to live.
There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One of these is roots; the other, wings.
