I’m taking my kids to one of my favorite places this summer. New York City. It will be their first visit.
Though we’ll read many books set in New York in the coming months, the first book I picked to read was Rabs and Ted and the Big Apple: Our Adventure in New York.
A Review of Rabs and Ted and the Big Apple
An accident with a Statue of Liberty Christmas tree ornament force Rabs and Ted to find a replacement – STAT! Fortunately, they have the assistance of a magical creature (read the book to find out who) and they’re whisked away to New York City.
Unfortunately, they’re not sure what they’re looking for exactly. They know they need an ornament, but they need to find the big apple. Where can they find a big apple in NYC? They meet people along the way who, in a very typical New York way, respond to their questions with straightforward honesty. This leads them to an adventure around the city. Do they get the ornament? Will anyone back home realize their gone? Do they ever figure out what the Big Apple really is? I’m not going to tell you, you have to read to find out.
What did the kids think?
Rabs and Ted and the Big Apple was a perfect bedtime story for my kids. They loved the main characters, Rabs and Ted. My daughter even “reads” the book to herself and tells me it’s her favorite bear and bunny. She thinks they’re hers. My son, who loves cities, asked me lots of questions about some of the things that were going on in the scene. We talked about the places Rabs and Ted visited, and we point those places out when we see them on TV or in other books.
What I needed was a book to be a fun introduction to one of my favorite places. Rabs and Ted were definitely the perfect hosts for my kids.
I’m excited to have the author on Kids Travel Books tomorrow to share her own love of travel and creative process. Please come back and visit.
I will also be giving away one book to one lucky reader. Check back tomorrow!

My son would love this! He’s almost 4, and anything with animals is right up his alley. Even though w shave no travel plans, this book would be a great way to introduce him to a new part of the country.

Definitely! I don’t think you have to be in the planning process to enjoy a book like this. 🙂

This sounds like a great read for kiddos! In general, I love the idea of children reading travel books in preparation for family trips to fun destinations. It gets the excitement flowing and has a built-in learning factor that allows a child to really understand in more depth what they are seeing and doing on their fabulous vacation. Travel books that given to children as a gift on a plane or in the car on their way to a destination also serve as great souvenirs.

They are great souvenirs. I always feel like introducing images of a place before a trip gives the sites an almost celebrity-like familiarity. It builds excitement in a way just showing up and discovering every site with no context can’t.
