Did you know there are Cinderella stories from around the world?
I didn’t.
Most of my experience with Cinderella growing up was the Disney version of the story. Sometime in high school I learned that the Brothers Grimm version, the one I referred to as the original up until about the starting of this website in late 2015, was quite a bit darker than Disney reimagined it.
On my first day of Women’s Studies class in college we were introduced to a different version of Cinderella. Here, in the Disney World’s hometown, we were introduced to a Cinderella narrator who questioned why the Stepmother had to be mean, why Cinderella had to wait to be rescued, and so on.
As it turns out, Cinderella’s story is not just a sign of the times or just a cleaned-up story made for kids. Cinderella, or someone very similar, has existed for over 2,000 years.
