Let’s take a moment to go back to last year, the last decade… or at least just last month. Throughout the course of December, I discovered a ton of fun books that are awaiting entrance into my travel book for kids pages. For now, they’re here. Enjoy the December Book Finds. Be sure to take a look at all of them. There are fun informative books about countries in Africa, chapter books set in Africa, Hawaii, Arctic Canada, Wisconsin, a famous river, throughout the US, Scandinavia, and Japan.
The biggest find from last month was an accident. I wrote a post about French children’s books and discovered a site, The Fable Cottage. It’s not about travel or about other countries, but it is a bilingual site that shares fables in different languages. Currently, those languages are Spanish, French, Italian, and German.
Children’s book about countries in Africa
Africa, Amazing Africa: Country by Country
by Atinuke (Author)
This is the first of three books by the author Atinuke. This one, though, is special. It’s a colorful introduction to each country in Africa.
A chapter book set in contemporary Africa
No. 1 Car Spotter
by Atinuke (Author)
The No. 1 car spotter got his name because he can spot cars. If a car passes his village, he knows exactly what kind of car it is. (He sounds like my son, actually). Unfortunately, while this book is set in today’s Africa, a specific country is never mentioned.
Children’s book series set in West Africa
The Anna Hibiscus Series
by Atinuke (Author)
These are four books set in modern West Africa.
Children’s book set in Hawaii
Ho’onani, Hula Warrior
by Heather Gale (Author), Mika Song (Illustrator)
This book is based on the true story of a girl trying to join a boy’s only activity at her school – a hula hoop competition.
Children’s book about growing up in an Iglu
The Pencil
by Susan Avingaq (Author), Maren Vsetula (Author), Charlene Chua (Illustrator)
Susan lives in an Iglu. Resources are scarce and the pencil is typically only used by her mother, until her mom steps out and Susan gets her hands on it.
Children’s book about life on the Hudson River
River
by Elisha Cooper (Author, Illustrator)
Follow someone as the go down the Hudson River and see the sights they see at the river’s edge. The book also includes a map and more information about the river.
Children’s book set in Wisconsin
Home in the Woods
by Eliza Wheeler (Author, Illustrator)
Another book based on a true story. This time, it’s the story the author’s grandmother told of life growing up in a shack in the middle of the Wisconsin woods.
Children’s book about August Wilson
Feed Your Mind
by Jen Bryant (Author), Cannaday Chapman (Illustrator)
This is a little different than the other books I have here, but I decided to add it anyway. This is the story of August Wilson, a famous playwright, who leaned on books when he was growing up.
A new children’s book series
The Adventures of Lily Huckleberry in Scandinavia
by Audrey Smit (Author, Illustrator), Jackie Knapp (Author)
This is a series of book (the other one is set in Japan). It’s a gorgeous book. You’ll want it on your bookshelf. Still, it’s also available with a kindle unlimited subscription.
