Day 14! We are over the hump.
Kids Travel Journal: N is for NEWS
When I was in high school and college, history classes were taught separately. We didn’t learn everything on one timeline, we learned on several timelines. I always wondered what was happening in China during the American Revolution. What was going on in Kenya during the Italian Renaissance?
I started writing down news stories in my personal travel journals whenever I remembered. Some stories never even made it to my journal, I’ll just always remember them.
- I was in Massachusetts when Saddam Hussein was executed.
- I was in Italy when the only news on CNN International was about the Austrian guy who kept his daughter in the basement for 20+ years.
The stories of events around the world, locally, or back home do not have to be as depressing as the ones I mentioned above. In fact, most of my actual news-related travel journal entries are less intense. We’d get an English newspaper delivered to our room or keep the TV on the only English channel. The big stories would be on repeat. Local stories will fill out the broadcast. Our conversations would extend to what was happening back home.
If you’re keeping a separate journal, you can write what you read in the papers or clip them out. Or you can use the prompts in the printable.
What’s happening in the world?
Give the journal a sense of time. Any major elections, celebrity gossip, wars, or awards?
What’s happening in locally?
Give the journal a sense of place. One of my favorite local news stories was in Panama City, FL. It was fish mating season.
What’s happening at home?
Give the journal a personal connection. Is it near the beginning of the school year and the local football team seems promising? Did dad get a promotion? Is the kitchen getting renovated?

Question for the commenters
I know a big part of the A-Z Challenge is meeting other bloggers and leaving comments. So, to help those of you leaving comments, you can either comment on something above or let me know –
What big events have happened while you were on vacation?
And next…
Every day during the challenge I’ll be linking to another participant. Today I introduce…
My Cozy Book Nook… who is writing about Paris.
